Mobile Broadband - How does it work?

Using your mobile phone to connect your laptop to the internet

Your phone is much cleverer than any USB stick, so why not make the most of it? Our USB modems are a genius piece of kit, but if you're the kind of person who sees it as just one more thing to carry around (and potentially lose!), you can plug your mobile into your laptop and use that as your modem instead.

If your phone has a built-in high-speed internet connection, it can be plugged directly into your laptop to get you online. And don't worry, it still works as a phone while it's doing it.

We told you it was clever.

How do I get started?

It's simple to set up, you'll just need to install some software - which usually comes on a CD with your phone when you buy it. Or you can download it from your phone manufacturer's website.

See links to major phone manufacturer's sites here

Insert your phone's software CD into your laptop and follow the instructions to install
Connect your phone to your laptop via Bluetooth or using the cable provided
Follow the simple instructions on screen to get started

That's it! You're ready to start surfing. And you only need to set this up once so you'll never need to wait to get online again.

How about an internet booster?

If you're an existing customer we recommend that you add a Booster to use your phone as a modem. This means that you will pay the same amount each month to access the internet, regardless of how much you browse. We recommend:

  • Either the Mobile Broadband Plus booster
  • Or, if you already have Internet included in your pay monthly plan, you should consider the Mobile Broadband upgrade booster

If you're a new customer, you can add a Booster when you buy your phone if you are planning to use it as a modem.
