  • Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom sign final agreement to combine T-Mobile UK and Orange UK into a 50:50 joint venture company.
  • T-Mobile makes a star out of aspiring musician, Josh Ward, by challenging him to create a supergroup just using text messages and the internet on his mobile phone.

  • T-Mobile offers its pre-pay customers unlimited free access to mobile internet for life on top of unlimited free texts, by topping up by £10 or more each month.

  • Srini Gopalan appointed Chief Marketing Officer. Srini was previously managing director of Capital One Bank, Europe.
  • Sales of the T-Mobile G1 with Google approach the 100,000 mark. T-Mobile confirms the launch of a second Android device later in 2009.
  • High-speed wireless internet service is launched on Virgin Train' West Coast Main Line. The Wi-Fi HotSpot service provides a wireless broadband connection throughout the entire journey.

  • Life's for Sharing brand campaign kicks off with Dance advert featuring 350 dancers going through a varied routine at Liverpool Street station in London.
  • YouTube channel launched to provide customer support for T-Mobile G1. It includes tips, tricks and updated video clips.

  • October
  • The T-Mobile G1 with Google is launched. The world's first handset to run on Google's Android open source software platform gives users the freedom to download unique applications from Android Market.
  • Good Call, T-Mobile's first corporate responsibility report in magazine format, is published. Designed to keep customers up to date on CR initiatives, the six-monthly report covers issues such as cyber bullying, recycling phones, volunteering, ethical procurement policies and the environment.
  • September
  • Pay per day Mobile Broadband is launched. The range of 1, 7 and 30-day packages offer fast and flexible internet access with no tie-in.
  • Heathrow Terminal 5 Wi-Fi HotSpot goes live.
  • Boosters give customers the power to personalise their price plans according to their needs. Boosters are available for talking and texting, for calling the UK from Europe, for making international calls and for internet access.

  • The charge for accessing the internet while travelling in EU countries is cut by 80%.
  • T-Mobile is the first mobile operator to deploy nationwide HSUPA capability, providing a fivefold increase in upload speeds of up to 1.4Mbps.

  • Strategic partnership formed with Yahoo!, making Yahoo! oneSearch the exclusive mobile search service for web'n'walk (now Internet on your phone) customers.
  • New price structures for the Business 1-Plan. Businesses with fewer than 30 connections receive double the amount of voice minutes at no added cost.
  • January
  • 3G network consolidation gets underway with the formation of a 50:50 joint venture between T-Mobile and 3UK. This collaboration will create the UK's most extensive 3G network by 2010 and deliver close to nationwide 3G population coverage.
  • Mobile phone recycling is given a boost with the introduction of a scheme to return unwanted phones via a freepost bag in the box of all new handsets.
